Blog disclosure: This post is sponsored by the Florida Prepaid College Board, through my role as a Believer Blogger. All thoughts are my own.
It’s no secret that the rising cost of college education is putting a burden on students and their families. As affordability becomes more of an issue, students find themselves graduating with tens of thousands of dollars of student loan debt.
We’ve covered student loans extensively on this blog. Now, I want to talk about families in Florida can save for college so they don’t have to worry about taking out loans in the first place.
Floridians are lucky in so far as they have access to the Florida Prepaid College plan. This is the program my parents used to save my brother and I’s college education. It’s also a big part of the reason why neither of us had to take on student loans.
Even though I ended up going to a private school and my parents did not use the program for tuition there, that extra money went to my brother who ended up staying in school a bit longer. Since his school was fully covered, that meant my parents could more easily afford my tuition.
If you’re not familiar with Florida Prepaid College, here’s a little rundown:
- Florida Prepaid is the longest running, most successful and largest prepaid tuition program in the country.
- 300,000 students have attended college using Florida Prepaid
- 52% of accounts are purchased for beneficiaries between the ages to 0 and 4 (My parents actually opened accounts as soon as my brother and I were born).
Account holders have the option of choosing from different savings programs which cover anything from a two-year college to a four-year university. The funds also cover tuition and fees (like the matriculation fee).
In a time when many of my friends and colleagues are suffering with the burden of student loans, I’m super grateful my parents took advantage of a program like Florida Prepaid.

Florida Prepaid’s Two-Year College Program is enough to cover tuition and other specified fees for 60 lower division credit hours at a Florida College. This means the child can get an Associate’s degree or a trade certification for free.
Imagine if you or your child didn’t have to worry about the cost of college for two whole years! This one scholarship could cut the cost of going to school in Florida by half.
Students these days are graduating with an average student loan debt of at least $29,000. That means you’d only have $14,500.
Better yet, that means you’d also have to save less money for you or your child to go to school. It’s a lot easier to save $14,000 than it is to save $28,000.
