How to Overcome the Fear of Rejection in Sales

When selling, you’re going to see and experience rejection at one time or another. Even the best salesperson doesn’t close 100% of their leads. This is a fact of business life.

Rejection is part of the game. Once you realize that rejection is a normal part of sales, you will feel liberated. One reason why people may be so scared of rejection is that they are people pleasers at heart. When you’re a people pleaser, you want everybody to like you, and that makes rejection very hard to deal with in business.

Also, there are those of us who don’t want to be risk-takers. These people want to be safe and stay average. They want to avoid risk, not screw up their money, and try to avoid risky situations. When you avoid risk, you will inevitably stay away from situations where you might get rejected. Putting yourself out there for a chance or opportunity is scary and pours fear into your heart.

However, the “average” population also can be jealous or angry at other entrepreneurs who are doing better than they are in business. The prosperous business owner is doing better than they are because the successful business owner stuck out their necks and took the risk. Making money really comes down to asking yourself two questions: question number one, do you want to make more money?

 

Do You Really Want to Make Money?

If you want to make more money, you’re going to have to put yourself out there and be subjected to rejection as part of the game. Are you willing to do what it takes and “jump off that cliff”? That’s a question to ask yourself.

Question #2: ask yourself, do you want to help people? Remember, money exchanges hands when problems are solved. For you to receive money, you have to help people. Assisting people involves putting yourself out there and running the risk of being rejected. If you want money, but you’re not willing to put yourself out there and be rejected, then you’ve lost your right to complain that you aren’t a successful company.

 

Accept that Rejection is Part of Sales

Accept the fact that rejection is a part of sales. You are going to get rejected. Rather than trying to resist rejection because you’re afraid, why not embrace the fact that it’s going to happen? Accept that you’re going to get rejected and that someone doesn’t like you because that is a normal part of life.

 

Fear of Criticism Will Keep You Poor

In the book club, we talk about the fear of criticism as one of the main concerns that keep people poor. This fear also keeps you in the “average club”. The reason fear keeps you in a poor financial state is that you don’t take the risk of being criticized. Sometimes you’ll be criticized for some unknown reason. Brush off the criticism and keep moving forward toward your goal.

 

Rejection and Objection

Make sure not to confuse an objection with rejection. Responses such as “not right now, it’s not the right time,” or “I can’t afford it” are all objections. You can still close your sale even if your lead has a complaint. Even a “no” isn’t necessarily a rejection. Find out why they said no and sell them on their why. Handle the objection and then close your sale!

 

Get Through the “No’s” to the “Yes” Clients

While a percentage of people are going to reject you, you will also have some warm leads say yes to your product or service. You’re going to have to go through a series of “no’s” before you get clients to say yes. This is a process every salesperson encounters daily. Additionally, don’t take the “no” personally and feel rejected. Don’t get emotionally involved in your sale.

 

How You Can become Confident in Sales

People ask me, “How are you so confident?” One main reason is that I’ve accepted that I’m not going to close every sale and not everyone is going to like me or my program – and that’s fine. Rather than trying to stay safe, I’ve learned to accept and embrace rejection as a part of sales.

 

Remember the Universe is Abundant

Keep in mind that the university is abundant! This is a spiritual and universal law.

Our current situation may not feel that way right now because of the pandemic. However, the universe doesn’t need your permission for the law of abundance to be true. Similar to the law of gravity, whether you believe in the law of gravity or not, gravity still exists and will pull you toward Earth. The law of abundance is the same. Whether you can see it or not, the law of abundance is in effect, so why not find out where the abundance is and move toward that space?
