Who are you?
Brendan is an entrepreneur and sales guru who has successfully paid off $20k in debt in less than 10 months. He is also a student in the Make Money Your Honey Academy, and considers himself an ordinary guy with extraordinary hair.
Brendan became obsessed with paying off his $20k debt when he became a father. He didn’t want the debt to loom over his life and determine the choices he made regarding his son’s future. He wanted to be able to provide for his son, pay for his education, and allow him the life he deserved. Brendan thinks that anyone can pay off debt and sell for yourself.
How did you start your debt payoff journey?
Brendan became motivated to pay off his debt and started educating himself by listening to Talk Radio with Dave Ramsey. He also started reading books and other materials to help him understand the best way to pay off debt.
Brendan started with the debt snowball, and started with his smallest debts. Once those were paid he would take the money and move it to the bigger debts he had. Every debt that he paid gave him the fuel to push further and pay off more.
What is an issue that you see among small business owners and making money to support themselves?
When Brendan coaches and consults with beginner entrepreneurs, he realizes that their sales process is lacking because they are afraid to sell themselves and their services. Instead of trying to sell for yourself, you tend to get nervous and not promote yourself. He also sees that many don’t know where to start with selling.
What advice do you have for someone who has no experience with sales?
Brendan says that practice is the best way for someone to get comfortable with selling. Instead of spending money on ads, sponsorships, and other items, practicing is free and will boost your confidence when you sell for yourself. Not only do you learn by getting out there, but you could also identify your target audience a lot faster than trial and error.
What is a great way to start generating sales and building clientele?
Brendan believes that sales one-on-one is one of the best ways to gain customers and generate sales. He thinks that entrepreneurs should match the value that they have with the needs of the customer. Then, they can communicate it with the same vocabulary as their customer. For example, if you are trying to appeal to an older clientele (like Brendan does) you may find yourself on the phone, or meeting in person. If dealing with a younger crowd, you will most likely be communicating via social media or text.
No matter how you communicate with your potential customer base, it’s really important to show them that the value you have has been staring them in the face the entire time. Brendan believes that you should step out of your comfort zone every now and then to try new things, and go back to the basics if it doesn’t work out. But, it’s also important to be yourself and sell for yourself.
Brendan likes to think about generating sales as a snowball effect (like paying off debt). You start off small, network, keep working with people, and build up your business. Whenever you have the opportunity to work with someone new in your circle, go for it! They may not be ideal, but you never know where the opportunity will lead. They may just refer you to someone who is ideal for you.
How would a freelancer use cold calling or emails to gain clients?
Brendan says to keep a spreadsheet of those you would like to pitch to. Then, customize your pitch to fit that brand or business, so that you can tailor your responses to them and what they need. While you may want to send out the same thing to every similar business, don’t. Take the time to connect with people and learn what they need from you.
If you are cold pitching via phone, Brendan thinks it’s best to be honest and ask for the direct person you want to speak with. If you get told no, then you can send an email to them instead. If they ask you to follow up, do so in a timely manner. Don’t wait weeks or months. You could also ask to leave a voicemail, that way you have the chance to explain who you are in your own words.
What advice do you have for those that want to be freelancers or small business owners, but feel stuck where they are because of debt?
Brendan finds it important to decide that debt has no place in your life. He thinks you should make it a staple in your life to be mindful and work to be debt free. Stick to a budget, say no to the things everyone else is doing (like taking vacations) so that you can boost your income and pay off debt faster. Live like no one else so you can live like no one else can later. Then, take some time to build your business or savings and sell for yourself.
What is one financial tip that you have to share?
Brendan says to get plugged into communities like the Make Money Your Honey Academy, Dave Ramsey’s community, and even communities like Side Hustle Nation. Connecting and networking with those who understand you and your journey will help lead you to your desired result. They will be supportive and help guide you when you don’t know what your next step is.
How do you make money your honey?
Brendan makes money his honey by talking about money with his honey. He is even taking his significant other to see Dave Ramsey so they can learn more about finances and positive progress together!
